Some thoughts on a grab-bag of topics:
Reports are out that Rush Limbaugh has teamed with Dave Checketts to submit a bid for the St. Louis Rams, and would keep the team in St. Louis. I can’t even begin to imagine Limbaugh as the owner of a professional sports team. That has nothing to do with his political views; it’s just a hard thing to imagine. Could you really see him going into the locker room after a game and addressing the team? What would he say? Especially (going back to his politics) how much he has crushed Obama … you’d have to think there’d be a group of players who would be offended by that, wouldn’t you? It would be fascinating to watch, though … I hope it happens.

- After writing a couple different times about how great Yao and the Rockets have looked in their series against the Lakers, the star-crossed center again got some terrible news yesterday, as J.A. Adande writes for ESPN.com. It’s an incredibly disappointing turn of events for the Rockets, as well as the NBA, as the series looked like it had the potential to at least go six games and be a fascinating battle. Now it will be very surprising to see Houston win another game.
- Sticking with the NBA, how many times can the officials blatantly get something wrong before things will begin to change? Once again, the league is under fire after a clearly blown call dramatically affected the outcome of a game. This time, Dallas’ Antoine Wright obviously tried to foul Carmelo Anthony with little time remaining with the Mavericks up two, 105-103. However, the officials failed to make the call, and Anthony was subsequently able to drain an open 3-pointer to give Denver a 106-105 win, and a commanding 3-0 lead in the series along with it.

- How amazing is Manny Pacquiao? After his complete destruction of Ricky Hatton, a fighter who had never lost at 140 pounds and was 45-1 in his career, last night, Pacquiao is cementing himself as, at the very least, one of the best fighters of the last 10-15 years, along with names like Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
With Mayweather announcing his return to the ring after a self-imposed 18-month exile in July against Juan Manuel Marquez, boxing could well be looking at a Mayweather-Pacquiao matchup by the end of the calendar year. In a sport that finally (hopefully) seems to be making a comeback, a fight like that would be the biggest event the sport has seen in ages – much bigger than even the fight between Mayweather and De La Hoya two years ago.
